We recommend students to look for a place to stay closer to their campus of study. We understand it might be hard staying alone and you might want to stay with your friends and family that are settled away from the campus however, picking the right place closer to the campus of study will allow you to attend your classes without worrying about the transportation and allow you to have an enjoyable student life outside of classes while taking part in our social events, other on-campus facilities.

If you are not planning on living with your family or friends there are three housing options available to you: student residence, off-campus housing, or homestay.

  1. The student residence fills quickly so if you are interested in living on-campus you will need to send us your application as soon as you are accepted to Niagara College.
  2. There are several off-campus housing options, all varying in price. To see what options are currently available to rent please visit places4students and view it. Please be mindful how far your new home is from your campus and determine your transportation options, the cost, and length of your daily commute as this can have a big impact on your overall experience.
  3. Homestay is an option that is great for students who want to improve their English and be immersed in Canadian culture. In homestay, you live with a Canadian family and receive two to three meals a day (included in the price). If you are interested in this option, you should apply directly to homestay services.
  4. Once you receive permission from Canadian Immigration to study at Niagara College, you should book your flight to Canada right away, and register for your terms Orientation, which occurs the week prior to classes.

The following table will give you an insight on additional expenses you may incur while studying in Canada. The following information is provided as a minimum estimate only. Individual choices regarding living accommodations may vary widely. Fees change on an academic-year basis.

All International students are provided the opportunity for a guard.me insurance policy, which is included in your fees. If you intend to arrive to Canada prior to your programs start date as outlined in your Letter of Acceptance, our insurance provider Guard.me offers Supplemental Insurance to ensure that you, and your dependents, are covered in case of an emergency or medical concern.

If you have on-going medical concerns, you are encouraged to bring any required documentation when you travel to allow doctors in Canada to quickly assess your condition. Additionally, students are eligible to purchase supplemental insurance for costs that are not covered through the International Student guard.me policy provided.

All students must review their program requirements as there may be additional requirements for your studies, such as Co-op, Technology, Communicable Disease Surveillance, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C, Physical Fitness, Transportation, Criminal Record Checks. A new country can be an overwhelming experience, so prepare yourself as best you can be doing some research on the Niagara Region and the neighboring areas. Even so, it can sometimes feel lonely when you first arrive, so be sure to bring a few reminders of home.

Learn about travelling in Canada and living in Niagara. If you would like to drive while in Canada, you will need to bring your driver’s license with you and then apply for a Canadian one when you arrive.

If you want to visit the United States (US), as many students do, we strongly encourage you to apply for your US entry visa from your home country, as it is often easier to do that than obtain one from Canada.

  • Review your terms Registration Guide and Important DatesNOTE: registration guides are updated approximately 2 months prior to each term start.
  • Approximately one month prior to term start, you will be eligible to Select Your Timetable if all outstanding conditions for your program are fulfilled, you have made payment to Niagara College as per the amount listed in your Letter of Acceptance or Final Invoice, and presented Niagara College with a copy of your approved study permit. Please note that you are still required to provide proof that you have a valid study permit to study in Canada four (4) weeks prior to the start of your program. Late submission of your study permit approval may impact your ability to register and is subjected to program availability.
  • LauNCh Guide – Introduction to Learning at NC, Blackboard Basics, Student Success and Personal Wellness.
  • We recommend that you arrive in Canada no earlier than 2-3 weeks (unless otherwise indicated in your LOA) prior to the start of your classes.
Should you decide to come to Canada earlier than the 2 to 3 weeks suggested (unless otherwise indicated in your LOA), it will be at your own risk and expense as CBSA (Canada Border Services) controls entry into Canada and have made it clear that you should not be arriving too early for start of classes. Please note that you are required to be present in Canada and on campus to attend your orientation and first day of your classes.
