Earlier this month, new students were provided with a “warm NC welcome” through a host of orientation activities and social events.

While Niagara College’s Athletics and Student Engagement department, in partnership with the International division and the NC Student Administrative Council (NCSAC), began offering programming for incoming students in July, the College’s main orientation activities were held during the first week of classes from September 5 to 8.

“It was incredible to see the life on campus during orientation week,” said Michele O’Keefe, Director, Athletics and Student Engagement. “All of the events, programs and services were designed to welcome first year students to Niagara College and without a doubt, mission was accomplished.”

On Orientation Day, Sept. 5, campus halls were filled with a sea of blue shirts worn by Engagement Leaders, International Student Assistants, volunteers, and college staff, who helped welcome new students to NC.

The day featured program and co-op information session, as well as the return of NCSAC’s Carnival, attended by President Sean Kennedy and NCSAC President Dipal Patel, who participated in events throughout the week to connect with students.

“There is always a very warm and exciting buzz of energy and excitement the first week of school. This year was that and more!” said Patel. “Our events throughout orientation are targeted around creating student memories and helping them feel comfortable in their first days at NC. Seeing the hundreds of smiling students who attended our events, we know – confidently – that incredible memories were made.”

During the week, students also enjoyed complimentary Welcome BBQ lunches at both campuses, an inflatable course at the Welland Campus, and cheered on the NC Knights during the first soccer home games of the season at Youngs Sportsplex on Sept. 8.

“All the events were amazing but the highlight for us was the bracelet making and the student support at the Taylor Swift themed Knights soccer home opener!” said Nimisha Sumathi, Student Engagement and Leadership Program Coordinator. “At the bracelet making sessions, students were creating, making friends, and generally having a great time. At the home opener, students showed their school spirit by creating signs, painting their faces, and cheering on their varsity soccer teams.”

A boat trip in Niagara Falls on Sept. 9 was also a popular outing, especially for international students who participated in many orientation initiatives to help ease their transition to college life in a new country.

“We had a large group of international students participate in our orientation activities during the first week of classes,” said Gary Torraville, Senior Director, International Students. “While these offerings are important for all students, they are crucial for our international students to help them get acquainted with life in Niagara, to make new friends and begin building relationships with college faculty, staff and fellow classmates.”

On Sept. 9, students experienced Niagara Falls with Niagara City Cruises.

NC’s lineup of social events for students continues through the month, including:

Speed Friending: Happening from 12-2 p.m. at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus on Sept. 19 and the Welland Campus on Sept. 21, Speed Friending is the perfect opportunity for students to meet new friends.

Vibin’ in the Vineyard: On Sept. 20 from 4-7 p.m., students can celebrate the start of school among the vineyards at the Teaching Winery (Daniel J. Patterson Campus) where there will be free food, free non-alcoholic drinks, music, lawn games and photo props. A ‘cash’ bar (debit and credit accepted) will be available inside the winery for students 19+ and have valid government ID. Registration is required.

Grape & Wine Parade: The annual Grape & Wine parade is happening on Sept. 23 in downtown St. Catharines. Students (and staff) can show their NC pride by joining the festivities on the College’s float or by walking the route. Bussing is available for students and shirts, designed by NC Marketing, are available for all college participants. Registration is required (see full details on the registration page).
