As the College continues to bring the world to Niagara, an upcoming event will provide the community with an opportunity to experience the harmonious fusion of musical mastery and flavours from India.
On November 18, the award-winning classical musician Sh.Subhash Ghosh will dazzle the audience with a performance at Benchmark Restaurant located at Niagara College’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The presentation will follow an India-inspired three-course menu dinner prepared by talented NC Culinary students. The artist, who is from Chandigarh, India, will also perform at NC’s Diwali Celebration on November 17.
“One of the key principles of being Canada’s Leading Global College is bringing the world to Niagara,” said Gary Torraville, Senior Director of International Students. “While that typically means attracting students from all over the world, it also means bringing individuals that help us recognize and celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of our student body. Having someone of the stature of Sh.Subhash Ghosh performing in Niagara is an opportunity we were proud to provide.”
Sh.Subhash Ghosh has not only performed at national and international festivals but has also shared his music in presentations to High Commissioners, Prime Ministers, and Presidents during the course of his career. What sets the artist apart is having invented the unique Sarasvani, a musical instrument that seamlessly combines the elements of Veena, Sarod, and guitar, all meticulously crafted from a single piece of wood, producing enchanting acoustic sounds. In addition, Sh.Subhash Ghosh has run the Academy of Indian Classical Music and Fine Arts to promote classical music as a social cause to children and youth for over 20 years.
“Sh.Subhash Ghosh is highly regarded for the innovation and trailblazing nature he has demonstrated to his musical craft,” said Torraville. “Our community will be delighted to experience his performance on instruments that he has personally invented and designed.”
NC students and alumni in the spotlight
The event will also be an opportunity to showcase the talents of NC students and alumni. Under the guidance of Benchmark Chef Justin Downes, School of Culinary Arts students will prepare the dinner. In addition, exceptional service will be provided by a team of students from the School of Hospitality & Tourism led by Benchmark Events & Catering Manager, Victor Oliveira.
“This will be a proud moment to see NC students confident to work on such a high standard event,” said Oliveira, who has recently participated in the reopening of Benchmark to the public along with Chef Downes. “A dining experience is much more than just food and drinks. The ambiance, the energy, the smells and tastes, the visuals, the lighting, all come together to take our guests on a fully immersive journey. This is why we decided to combine a sound experience with a taste experience.”
Dessert will be prepared by the proud NC alumni Pawan Lulla and Niti Ruparel Lulla, owners of the successful Niagara Falls bakery Bittersweet Symphony. Originally from India, the NC Culinary Management graduates prepared a special recipe for the occasion.
“Returning to NC to share our culinary skills with the community is a dream come true,” said Pawan Lulla. “To make this event as unique as Sh.Subhash Ghosh’s music, we came up with the idea of preparing a Kheer Cream Brûlée. This is a fusion dessert that has Indian roots while representing Canadian culture. Kheer is a traditional Indian rice pudding lovingly prepared in every Indian household on festivals and special occasions.”
