Working in Canada

Off-Campus Work

An exciting option for students who qualify is the opportunity to work off-campus in any industry. Learn more about this program!

On-Campus Work

International Students who are registered full-time students and are in good academic standing are permitted to work on-campus without a work permit. Students must maintain good academic standing in order to access most funding for on-campus jobs.

Niagara College helps students to develop Canadian styled resumes and cover letters, teaches how to conduct a job search and what to expect at an interview and will direct students how to apply for a social insurance number. Students are responsible for finding and applying for on-campus jobs themselves.

Co-op and Internships

International Students who must complete a co-op or internship that is integral to the completion of their program must have a work permit. The International Department holds workshops throughout the year for students who need to apply for this permit. All you need to apply is your passport with your current study permit inside. There is no charge for this permit.

Post Graduation Work Permit

International Students who have successfully completed their post-secondary or graduate certificate program have the opportunity to work in Canada for a maximum of three years. The permit must be applied for within 90 days from when grades become available. Students must also have a valid study permit at the time of applying.

The permit is for a maximum of three years and cannot be extended. The length of the permit is determined by the length of the program, i.e. one-year program = a one-year permit; while either a two or three-year program = a three year permit.

See more detailed information about the Open Post Graduate Work Permit at our link.

The cost of the permit is $150CDN. The International Department of Niagara College is available to assist students after graduation with applying for this permit.
