Are you planning to head overseas or out of the country to do a placement, co-op or internship? If so, talk to your co-op advisor, professor or coordinator about participating in a competency based pre-departure program set to equip you with the attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary for personal and professional success overseas.

Pre-departure Training at Niagara College

The pre-departure training has been developed as a non-credit local certificate course at Niagara College that will serve as a pre-departure preparation program for young professionals.

This pre-departure training program aims to build the global skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will position students to pursue careers in an interconnected global economy.

The three-week pre-departure training program is divided into four distinct parts:

  • Coursework
  • Language Training
  • Specialized International Development Training
  • Logistical support.
Coursework

The coursework is a comprehensive international career readiness course which focuses on achieving the following competencies: Young professionals will:

  • recognize the individual’s place within a global context
  • develop applied project management skills
  • recognize how diversity affects the workplace
  • build a professional toolkit
Language Training

The course is supported by six hours per week of language training relevant to the host country.

Specialized International Development Training

Training will be delivered by the International Business and the International Education and Development Divisions respectively (3 hours/week). Development Training (CIDA) will introduce the relevant theoretical definitions, principles and historical context of international development practices within a global perspective.

Logistical Support

Logistical support includes travel logistics, contracts and paperwork, ticket purchase, independent research on placement, visa application, health insurance preparation, host introductions, meeting with past interns, and independent meetings with the Young Professional Coordinator to review self assessment and individual work and risk-management plans.
